GAPPO Girls Support Program (GGSP)

The GAPPO Girls Support Program (GGSP) is designed to empower, educate, and support young girls across African communities, especially those facing social, economic, and cultural barriers. The program addresses various challenges that girls encounter in their pursuit of education, health, and personal development. By providing resources, mentorship, and training, GGSP aims to uplift girls, boost their confidence, and prepare them for a brighter future. Below are the key activities under the GGSP:

Distribution of Sanitary Pads & Menstrual Health Education

  • Sanitary Pad Distribution: Regularly distribute sanitary pads to high school girls, especially in underserved communities, to help them manage their menstrual hygiene with dignity and comfort.
  • Menstrual Health Education Workshops: Organize workshops to educate girls about menstrual health, reproductive rights, and hygiene practices, addressing myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
  • Reusable Pads & Menstrual Cups: Provide sustainable menstrual products, such as reusable pads and menstrual cups, along with training on how to use and maintain them, promoting eco-friendly practices.

2. Scholarships & Educational Support

  • School Fee Assistance: Offer scholarships and financial support to cover school fees, uniforms, books, and other educational expenses for girls from low-income families.
  • Tutoring & Academic Support Programs: Arrange tutoring sessions in subjects like mathematics, science, and language to help girls improve their academic performance.
  • Provision of School Supplies: Distribute essential school materials such as notebooks, stationery, backpacks, and textbooks to ensure girls have the tools needed for their education.

3. Skills Training & Entrepreneurship Programs

  • Vocational Training: Provide skills training in areas such as sewing, hairdressing, catering, and crafts to help girls develop practical skills they can use to earn a livelihood.
  • Entrepreneurship Workshops: Offer business training sessions where girls can learn how to start and manage small businesses, including financial literacy, marketing, and customer service.
  • Handcraft & Jewelry Making: Teach girls how to make handcrafts and jewelry, giving them the opportunity to sell their products and earn income while still in school.

4. Health & Wellness Programs

  • Health Screenings & Vaccinations: Partner with healthcare professionals to provide regular health checkups, vaccinations, and consultations to girls, focusing on preventive healthcare.
  • Nutrition & Fitness Programs: Educate girls on the importance of a balanced diet and physical fitness, with programs that include exercise routines, cooking classes, and healthy eating tips.
  • Mental Health Awareness & Counseling: Offer mental health awareness sessions and counseling services to help girls deal with issues like stress, anxiety, and depression, providing them with emotional support.

5. Mentorship & Leadership Development

  • Mentorship Programs: Pair girls with female mentors who can guide them in academic, career, and personal development, inspiring them to pursue their dreams.

6. Reproductive Health Education

  • Family Planning Education: Educate girls on family planning methods and reproductive choices, empowering them to make informed decisions about their futures.

7. Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

  • Anti-GBV Workshops: Conduct workshops to educate girls on their rights, how to identify and report gender-based violence, and ways to seek help.
  • Self-Defense Training: Offer self-defense classes to teach girls how to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations, boosting their confidence and sense of security.
  • Legal Assistance & Advocacy: Provide information on legal resources available to girls who have experienced violence or discrimination, and advocate for their rights.

8. Digital Literacy & Technology Training

  • Computer Skills Training: Introduce girls to basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and internet use, to equip them with essential digital knowledge.

9. Advocacy for Girls’ Rights & Community Engagement

  • Community Dialogues on Gender Equality: Facilitate discussions in communities about gender equality, encouraging parents and community leaders to support girls’ education and empowerment.

10. Sports & Extracurricular Activities

11. Safe Spaces & Girls’ Clubs

  • Formation of Girls’ Clubs: Support the establishment of school-based or community-based girls’ clubs that focus on topics like leadership, health, and life skills development.
